Downeast delicacy

I'm up in Maine this weekend. It's about a 180 mile drive North and I mean North. Augusta Maine is Stickville USA. I try and get up to visit my 94 year old grandfather who lives up here when I can. He still lives on his own. Quite sufficiently in fact. Some of you might have seen my post around Christmas time. If you didn't, it's worth going back and looking at the photos I took of him snowshoeing with us on Christmas Day.

Here he is at the stove cooking me Fiddleheads tonight. Basically it's a fern that you pick in it's very early stages curled up near rivers or streams. My grandfather is just back from a fishing trip up in Caribou Maine (Super stickville USA) Anyway, trout and Fiddleheads where on the agenda while on his trip so I was "treated" to this delicacy tonight. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical. "Can't we just eat this nice salad from the bag grampa?"

Oh.. and hills. There are hills here. Mile long hills. I never pass up a run here.
Tomorrow morning I have a pre-breakfast date with them.

Used to live in that stickville of Caribou. Limestone actually which is even farther north. Had something to do with airplanes up there. It is really almost a different country. If you can deal with the black flies and noseeums it is beautiful stuff.

yumm fiddlehead ferns are so good. And they are very $$ so super cool that you got them wild! What an awesome inspiration for you and good genes, too!

dear god, i almost had a heart attack when your blog came up...for a minute i thought you had posted a picture of celery in your header, lol....
your grandpa is so hardcore - i remember those snowshoe pics. and yum, fiddleheads, those are fun to eat. i remember that canada had a fiddlehead as a mascot for some national team/games and everyone was "what the f*ck is that thing?"...it was hilarious...but seriously, a fiddlehead mascot? what were they thinking....
it sounds like you are back at the running. how are you feeling?

I am on a mission to get that coconut shampoo! Thank you so much for letting me know about it!

I wish that I had blond hair so that I could use the coconut stuff. But seriously, my mom's dog got sprayed directly by a skunk one summer and I dragged her right into the pool and after a whole bottle of Suave coconut shampoo, the smell was gone.
Want to meet up after the race on Saturday? Are you sticking around long enough for icecream? My e-mail is pedergraham at yahoo dot com--send me an e-mail and we can exchange cell #s. Oh--what Team Psycho outfit are you going to be wearing? Then we can look for you out on the course. (I think we'll probably cheer out on the bike course to avoid some of the skeeters at the park.)
Hope your foot shapes up in the next few days!

So cute. I love him and don't even know him. You are very, very lucky to have him around! I don't have any grandparents and only met my grandma's once before they passed. Enjoy your priceless time!
