Chicken soup and Femur snapping orthotics?

I'm in a shitty shitty  mood today and guess what?  Every time it's 75 degrees out and sunny, you can guess my mood. It's MARCH people. I swear, when I was healthy as a damn Ox, NEVER was it 75 and sunny in frickin' MARCH here in Boston.  It's supposed to be SNOWING and WINDY and 42 damn it.

Not this year! Oh. no... I'm crippled and it's SUMMER!!  GO FREAKING FIGURE...
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I am so cranky.   I think I've cleaned my bathroom 6 times this week, I know I've vacuumed  4. I've changed my toenail polish at least 3 times.
Today I bought new sheets, and towels and a Vera Wang top grain leather bag I didn't need, earrings, and more cleaning supplies to re-clean any hard surface I can find to re-clean.

Good god......

I'm making homemade chicken soup protesting the weather I can't go out and train in. Ha!

All my tests have come back normal. Bone density, Vitamin D deficiency,  all with in normal limits.
I got nothing. No clear answers how I could possibly have 2 stress fractures in 2 years.

But I've been digging.. and searching and trying to make some sense of this.  left side, femoral compression
stress fracture and I think.....

I may....
be on......

to something........

These orthotics were made for me in November. I took my time in "breaking them in" but as you can
see the LEFT one is much different from the right one. Do I have a huge leg discrepancy? Um... no.
These were made like this because "my left arch seemed to be collapsing a bit and I was told, I needed
the extra lift and support in the left arch area.

Honestly, I never really looked at how different they really were.  I think they crippled me.  I paid $200 for
bone snapping orthotics  that I'm pretty much convinced made me buy new sheets, towels, earrings and that supple leather Vera Wang leather bag today along with cleaning supplies to re-clean my already sterile  domain all to I try to keep busy and maintain  my SANITY!!!!!!!!!!

Just the idea that the things you have been advised to put in your shoes to help you, could be the very things that are breaking your bones makes me sick to my stomach. I'm sorry you have to go through this again, but good on you for looking into possible solutions.

UGHHHHHHHH
I was going to ask the question, but GZ beat me, "WHY orthodics anyway?"

I bet that Verga Wang Bag is kick ass. Post a pic!

PS the bad weather is coming your way, we are getting hammered (Snow).

I don't know enough about why you went with orthotics to begin with. They can be helpful but not always. I don't know if they were the cause of the stress fracture or not, but they may have contributed, but the way the orthotics broke down shows that you have some biomechanical issues to begin with. You might have gotten a fracture anyway? Stress fracture also have dietary implications. I'm not much help here.

I was injured all the time when I wore orthodics. I threw them out and now my injuries have been few and far between, with causes that I can pinpoint. I can't make a universal statement that they aren't good for anyone, but while my doctors convinced me that I needed them, my runner friends convinced me that I did not. And my runner friends were right. ;)

Yikes Elaine. That SUCKS! Definitely bring those back to the pediotrist that made them for you and share a few words. I hope you get better and heal up, but more importantly I hope you get to the source of all this mess so you can stop it from happening and getting back to having a messy house full of sweaty workout clothes. :-)

GZ and Jen

I was fitted for orthotics because I had had Plantar fasciitits and the previous cuboid stress fracture in the same foot. Even though those issues had resolved, I didn't blink an eye when advised I should run with orthotics. PREVENTATIVE-was my reasoning for going along with having them.

Lucho-
They are not broken down. They are actually hardly used. I got them late in November and was injured by mid January. The left one is built up differently from the right one to support my high arches and previous issues in that left foot, hence the difference in the photos and yup, the hip stress fractures are sometimes linked with nutritional deficiencies. All my tests came back with flying colors. Good with calcium intake, a bit under the general norm of weight for my height but not even close to dangerously.

I'm just unlucky?

The only word that describes your situation starts with F and ends in K. Hope you'll heal fast and it was the orthotics- Seems to fit with the new studies that say that all those highly cushioned shoes with their controls just weaken and hurt the body instead of helping.

Hey Elaine-
I have been following your blog for awhile and have enjoyed your musings and sense of humor.
I am an old washed-up collegiate swimmer turned runner turned bad-kneed triathlete.
For the first time ever,I had knee issues. I went and got orthotics and my knees weren't better.
Took some rest, started running, barefoot on the beach and never had any trouble since. Not feeling the Vibrams, bought some Zoot running shoes with medial support and haven't had an issue since. I am a "heavy runner" at 5"8 and 140 so I am actually surprise that this is working for me.
I feel less is more and letting your gait work for you.
Feel better and Happy Training,

Shannon Doherty Alger

You are definitely on to something and the worst part is, like Sonja said...it was supposed to be something that was HELPING you. Oh.....so annoyed for you!!!!

Hi Shannon! Thanks for the advice. I am having a ceremonial burning of my expensive cripple inserts. eeks! Can't say they were the EXACT cause but I'm sure not gonna mess with them again to find out. I have some Zoot running shoes too. Just haven't worn them yet. Barefoot sand walking/running sounds like a great idea to strengthen you feet
